How To Pawn An Item In South Carolina

Your local pawn shop is a great place to find amazing deals on various merchandise. But, if you’ve never pawned anything before, it may seem like an overwhelming experience. Never fear – the process to pawn an item is so simple that you’ll wonder why you haven’t done it earlier. Let’s walk through how easy it is to pawn an item in South Carolina.

Where do I start?

You’ve come to the right place if you’ve never pawned an item! At Gene’s Jewelry & Pawn, we will treat you like a member of our own family. Rest assured that whether you’re new to pawning or you’ve done it many times before, you can pawn an item with us in about 10 minutes.

First, how much money do you need to borrow? Whether you need quick cash to cover an emergency or take a well-earned vacation, we can help you get the cash you need without hassle or paperwork. Knowing how much you need to borrow enables you to get the money you need without getting in over your head.

What can I pawn?

Look around at what you already have. Are there tools in the garage that have been sitting unused? Do you have jewelry you never wear? What about old electronics, like computers, tablets, or TVs, taking up precious space? Any of these items – plus many more – could help provide the collateral you need for a pawn loan. Depending on how much money you need, you may need to pawn several valuable items to secure the loan.

Pawn shops may vary in what they will take for collateral, but generally, they will take anything of value, including:

  • Gold, silver, and precious metals
  • Electronics
  • Gaming consoles and games
  • Luxury items, including clothing, accessories, shoes, and handbags
  • Fine jewelry and watches
  • Power tools
  • Musical instruments
  • Sports equipment
  • Firearms

How do I know what my things are worth at a pawnshop?

There are many factors to consider when determining an item’s value. For example, you bought a new guitar for $500 last year. Now, you want to pawn it in exchange for some quick cash. However, you shouldn’t expect to get a $500 pawn loan for it.

Why? Your item’s value depends on what a buyer would pay for it today. What you paid for that guitar last year doesn’t matter anymore. What does matter is the item’s current market value, including the condition of the item, how popular it is in the marketplace, and how much demand there is for that item.

So, if you’ve kept your guitar in excellent condition and there’s a strong demand from sellers looking for that brand and style, you’ll likely get more money. However, you probably won’t get a high offer if your guitar is heavily scratched or worn and buyer demand is low. Check out our article “What Can I Pawn for $200?” for other examples of how current market value can determine how much money your items are worth.

For high-end jewelry, precious metals, or luxury goods, there’s a bit more work involved to verify and determine its worth accurately. For example, karat weight significantly affects the loan amount you may be offered with jewelry and precious metals. Items made of pure gold (24k) or sterling silver will be far more valuable than anything considered gold- or silver-plated. Jewelry or watches containing natural diamonds will also be of higher quality and value.

OK, I think I’m ready. Now what?

You’ve gathered your items. Completed your research. You’ve read reviews and narrowed it down to the reputable local pawn shop you want to visit. Great! Now, what happens?

  • Make it shine. Before visiting the pawn shop, ensure your items are clean and in good working order. Don’t forget to grab any valuable accessories, including power cords, cables, remotes, or anything else that may increase the item’s value.
  • Bring your ID. While pawn transactions are simple, you do need to present a valid ID, such as a driver’s license or photo ID, to secure a pawn loan.
  • Keep your ticket. Your pawn ticket becomes critical, especially once you’ve paid off your loan and are ready to retrieve your item. Make sure you keep it in a safe place for later!
  • Be polite and friendly. A great attitude goes a long way! Be flexible and willing to provide as much information about your items as possible.
  • Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you need clarity or don’t understand something. Pawnbrokers are happy to spend whatever time you need to ensure you clearly understand the terms and conditions of the loan.
  • Bring multiple items and be open to negotiating. This is especially important if you’re trying to get a certain amount for your pawn loan.
  • Repay your loan to get your stuff back. You have 30 days at Gene’s to pay off your loan with interest. You get your item back once you pay it off and return it with your pawn ticket! We also offer partial payment terms and extensions if you cannot pay the total amount in 30 days. If you choose not to repay the loan, the items become our property, and you walk away without negatively impacting your credit history.
